The Nigerian government’s crackdown on the pro-Biafra separatist movement has continued to escalate with recent protests ending in over 100 people arrested and police firing at journalists.
Led by activist Omoyele Sowore, the demonstration in the capital Abuja on 20 October 2025 demanded the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained secessionist leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu faces terrorism charges for his campaign to resurrect the long-buried dream of an independent state of Biafra in Nigeria’s South East.
