Rachel Seidu, a visual artist who lives and works in Lagos, captured this shot as part of a project about queer relationships and resistance in Nigeria, where anti-LGBTQI+ laws threaten basic rights. Debbie and Alex, pictured, are open about their partnership despite the hostility they face.
‘I’m inspired by the need to tell stories, to document my life, my friends, my community… and hopefully the world at large,’ says Seidu. She also works on films and says she aims to develop her storytelling and ‘become one of the most important photographers of this generation’.
