It was a Friday evening and my 24-year-old brother, Chukwuebuka Eze, had just finished work in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. On his way home he stopped for a haircut. The barber had barely begun work when 10 armed police officers stormed in and rounded up him and 14 other young men, forcing them into waiting vans.
‘I had no idea what was happening,’ says Chukwuebuka as he remembers that day in May 2024. ‘The officers burst in like something from a Hollywood movie. I tried to run, but I couldn’t because I had fractured my leg months earlier.’
