Authorities in Malaysia have escalated detention operations, leaving thousands of undocumented Rohingya refugees in the country at risk of arrest and detention. ‘People are living with fear in hidden places, skipping work, delaying hospital visits, and keeping family members hidden in crowded rooms,’ says a Rohingya teacher living in Malaysia.
Malaysia was once a haven for the Rohingya community fleeing violence in Myanmar. However, many Rohingya remain undocumented and unprotected, as the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has failed to register them despite repeated appeals.
