Escalating delays in the UK’s asylum system are prolonging the suffering of people left unable to work or access many public services.
According to analysis by the Migration Observatory, around 101,000 people were awaiting an initial Home Office decision on their asylum application at the end of December 2021. This is more than 10 times the figure on 30 June 2010. Of those awaiting decisions, 62 per cent had been doing so for more than six months.
