Women in India could be forgiven for hoping that the gang-rape of a young physiotherapist on a Delhi bus in December 2012 might have been a turning point in the prosecution of sexual violence. Instead, rape conviction rates have been steadily declining, down from 26 per cent in 2011 to 24 per cent in 2013.
However, for Dalit women (from the caste once known as ‘Untouchables’, still predominantly illegally employed cleaning toilets with their bare hands) the conviction rate is two per cent..
