What does ‘development’ mean for women living near one of the largest and notoriously polluting goldmines in the world? This photography project involving 12 women from Cajamarca, Peru, provides a startling and original vision of that much-contested term.
For many of the activists this was first time they had ever used a camera, says Katy Jenkins of Northumbria University, who led the three-month participatory project entitled ‘Women, Mining and Photography’, funded by the Leverhulme Trust. So first there were workshops on how to use a camera, as well as how to ‘read’ visual images and make meaning through photography.
