A dust-covered miner gazes over his shoulder into the Rubaya pit in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Rubaya site supplies 15 per cent of the world’s coltan, an ore crucial for mobile phone and computer production. This shot was captured by Eduardo Soteras Jalil, a self-taught photographer and former accountant. Born in Argentina to a Lebanese family and now based in Kenya, Jalil has founded several photography collectives including ActiveStills, an anti-Zionist group operating across Palestine/Israel.
Photography ‘is a constant questioning’, he says, adding that his documentary work ‘explores human existence in the cracks of life’.
