In northern Norway the fight is on to save Sámi culture, and a precious ecosystem, from copper mining. Dominik Sipinski reports.
Rebecka Ekeland, a Sámi-Kven activist from Tromsø in northern Norway, has been arrested four times for trying to halt the development of Nussir, a copper mine on the shores of the Repparfjorden fjord. Still, she has no doubt it was the right thing to do.
‘We don’t have a choice,’ she says. ‘We must fight to stop the mine, we have to step up and protect our people, our land, our Indigenous rights.’
