Girma Berta is a self-taught artist from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In his series Moving Shadows I/ II a protagonist in motion is cut out from their original busy context – often the bustling streets of Addis Ababa – and juxtaposed against a vibrant background. Using his mobile phone/digital camera and editing software, Berta aims to provide an ‘insight into the existences of Addis Ababa’s residents’ – a city whose residents were, until very recently, was under a government ban on posting content to social media. Despite this, Berta’s avid use of it to share his work has led to international acclaim and awards. He is an advocate for young people ‘taking control of their own stories in the digital world’.
