Thirty years after the Bhopal tragedy, justice remains elusive for the victims. On 3 December 1984, a toxic gas leak in Bhopal, India, killed almost 4,000 people in a matter of hours, while 558,125 people sustained injuries from gas exposure. The leak came from a Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant with a faulty safety record.
Afterwards, the Indian government pursued UCIL for over $3 billion damages, but settled for $470 million. In 2001, UCIL was acquired by US-based Dow Chemical, further removing the chain of responsibility.
