Papua New Guinea’s government declared a two-week state of emergency in capital Port Moresby, after rioting left 16 dead. The unrest was sparked after public sector workers, including police, went on strike over unexplained pay deductions, blamed by officials on a ‘technical glitch’.
Bangladesh’s incumbent Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has won an election widely condemned as flawed and boycotted by other parties. Almost 10,000 opposition activists were arrested from the end of October in the run up to the January poll. Meanwhile, protests for a higher minimum wage in Bangladesh’s garment industry have been met with mass lay-offs.
