Uruguayans voted down two referendum proposals on 27 October: the first, a union-proposed pension reform to return the retirement age to 60, from 65, boost payouts and move to a public pension model; the second, to boost police powers, allowing night raids. A simultaneous presidential election was inconclusive, with a run-off planned for 24 November.
Turkey has intensified its attacks on the predominantly Kurdish region of Rojava, in northeast Syria, killing civilians in aerial and artillery strikes. The region’s progressive administration says the targeting of infrastructure has left over 250,000 without electricity, and more than 50,000
