Campaigners were jubilant when the Tate group of galleries suddenly announced in March that its sponsorship deal with BP was ending.
The announcement followed six years of audacious creative interventions by art collective Liberate Tate, including ‘Time Piece’, in which they occupied the Tate’s famous Turbine Hall for 25 hours, decorating its vast floor with pertinent charcoal words; ‘Human Cost’, featuring a naked man covered in ‘oil’ on the Deepwater Horizon anniversary; and ‘Birthmark’, with performers being tattooed with the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere in their birth year.
