The Jacques Cartier-Bridge primary point of access to the island of Montreal, was brought to a standstill on 22 October, 2024. Two activists, members of Last Generation Canada and Collectif Antigone, had scaled the structure in the name of climate justice.
Their demands of the federal government were simple: endorse the international Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to prohibit new oil, coal and gas developments; put in place a national authority to mitigate climate disasters; and close the 47-year-old Enbridge Line 9B pipeline which transports polluting Albertan oil through Quebec and Ontario, threatening the clean water of more than three million people.1
