This striking photo captures participants of a large Indigenous minga – a traditional gathering to work towards a common goal, in this case the rights of Indigenous people – leaving Cali, Colombia in May 2021. The event was at the epicentre of a social uprising. Just two days before, Indigenous groups were shot at by armed civilians while leaving the city.
Carolina Navas is a photographer and director from Cali, and has worked on a number of documentaries. ‘Colombia is a very complex, intense and paradoxical country,’ she says. ‘There are many stories here that are waiting to be told.’
