Anti-fossil fuel campaigners Platform are celebrating a small win against oil giant Shell after London’s Southbank Centre ended an eight-year sponsorship deal with the transnational corporation.
Platform London and the coalition group Art Not Oil have protested creatively for years against Southbank’s financial relationship with Shell. Uninvited choirs and silent protests have been staged to inform members of the public about the environmental costs and human rights abuses the company has been linked to, such as extracting tar-sands oil in Canada on indigenous peoples’ lands and environmental devastation in the Niger Delta.
