A decade of pressure on a global paper and pulp producer accused of destroying vast swathes of Indonesian rainforest has paid off – with campaigning groups hailing a significant victory in the fight against deforestation.
Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) has come under intense scrutiny for its use of rainforest fibre for the many household products it makes. A wave of public protest following the launch of the Greenpeace-led campaign persuaded familiar global brands such as Adidas, Kraft, Nestlé, Danone, KFC and Unilever to cancel contracts with APP, and a two-year moratorium on deforestation instigated by the Indonesian government in May 2011 has added to the pressure on the paper producer.
