Garry Lotulung took this photo in the village of Selopamioro, on the island of Java in Indonesia. A drought late last year left this spring the only source of water for 50 families. Residents resorted to sucking water through pipes by mouth, to set up siphons to transport it to their homes.
A freelance Jakarta-based photojournalist, Garry specializes in stories about ‘the human condition, social change, and environmental crises. My vision is to photograph places I am concerned about with a view to helping save them’, he said. ‘But photographs can only remind us what has happened. If I’ve done my job properly, the image should convey empathy and concern.’
