Following a German magazine’s controversial AI ‘interview’ with stricken Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher, the Washington Post has contrived to lower the tone even further by having Chat GPT crudely re-animate abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
The results were about as illuminating as an autotuned remix of ‘I Have a Dream’. ‘AI Tubman’ tried to pass off a Kanye West lyric as her own, and gave typically toothless responses over issues like slavery reparations which would presumably have provoked a fiery response from the real Tubman. This was less ‘digital blackface’ than digital censorship, reducing the civil rights icon to a milquetoast centrist.
