The proposed Pucallpa-Cruzeiro do Sul highway would connect Peru with Brazil, cutting through areas of untouched rainforest. But environmental concerns such as deforestation aren’t the only threat the project poses.
Onamiap, an Indigenous rights group, warned in a recent report that the new road ‘facilitates the occupation and invasion of Indigenous territories, putting the protection of the forests at risk’. The group is also concerned that the construction will expose their communities to violence as drug traffickers access more remote corners of the forest.
