Los Auténticos (The Authentics) is one of the most loved and well-known carnival troupes of San Pedro, a neighbourhood in Cajamarca, northern Peru. In this shot by photographer Gabriel Tejada, who is based in the city, one of the members strikes a pose in a costume they will be wearing for the big party that is the Carnival of Cajamarca.
Tejada says he is ‘interested in customs and festivals because they speak of identity, which I consider the basis of society... My photographic projects revolve around people and the space where they develop.’ His work often focuses on the traditions of rural populations and the people of the Andes.
