Rich countries’ refuse to compensate vulnerable countries.
As the COP26 summit wrapped up in Glasgow, leading climate scientist Professor Simon Lewis gave his verdict on our chances of ‘keeping 1.5 alive’: ‘It has a pulse – but only just’.
Campaigners felt the same way. The Glasgow climate pact made important progress – countries pledged deeper carbon cuts and left the door open for more – but it was far from the rapid step-change needed to keep our climate within the safe limit of 1.5 °C warming.
