On 16 April 2021, riders for delivery firm iFood crossed their arms and refused to work in São Paulo, calling for better pay and the end of unfair dismissal. A few days before the strike, an artist from a poor neighborhood recorded videos in support of the cause. But a day later, he released another video, appearing this time alongside four unidentified men, performing a kind of ‘self-criticism’ for having supported the strikers.
Riders for iFood, which dominates the takeaway market in Brazil, say they have repeatedly received death threats and intimidation from militias – made up of current and former police officers allegedly connected to organized crime – after being involved in disputes with iFood management.
