The number of fires in the Xingu Indigenous Park is increasing each year, threatening traditional ways of life. The scene was photographed by Lalo de Almeida, who last year won the World Press Photo Long-Term Project Award for his work covering the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. From Brazil, he studied photography at Milan’s Instituto Europeo di Design. Since the late 1990s he has been working for the Brazilian daily newspaper Folha de São Paulo, as well as documentary photo projects.
