Landmines laid during Zimbabwe's colonial wars are still claiming lives almost 40 years later and have become a serious concern for the affected communities, especially along the northeast border with Mozambique in Mudzi district.
International landmine charities agree that Zimbabwe is one of the most mined countries in the world. Dense belts of explosive devices were laid by the Rhodesian army along the borders with Mozambique and Zambia during the Liberation War in the 1970s.
