In his series ‘Fragile Responsibility’, Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga explores national and cultural identity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), using acrylic and oil on canvas. Many people in the increasingly globalized DRC reject the country’s multi-ethnic indigenous heritage. According to the artist, his figures are mourning this loss of tradition. Bright fabrics hang limply from their bodies as they quizzically inspect various European porcelain objects – a reference to Congo’s slave-trading and colonial past. And, with the DRC being one of the world’s largest exporters of coltan – a mineral used in the development of electronics – their bodies are rendered as digital circuit boards.
