After 28 months of tense court hearings in the notorious Bagua case, Peru’s Amazonian indigenous and non-indigenous protesters have been acquitted of all charges, which ranged from disturbing the peace to murder and conspiracy against the state.
In his deliberation, the judge from the Superior Court of Bagua said: ‘I still don’t know who bears responsibility for the crimes before me, but I’m handing down this decision so that this never happens again.’ He then issued an order for the immediate clearing of criminal records for all 52 accused.
