by Tanya Tagaq (Six Shooter Records CD, LP and download)
If you’ve never heard throat singing before, prepare yourself for quite an experience: an accomplished throat singer can call on a range of tones and timbres that can border on the spectral. Tanya Tagaq is an Inuit artist from Canada’s high Arctic regions and Animism, her fourth album, shows the musician in sublime and spectacular form. Think, perhaps, of some of Björk’s further reaches or Sainkho Namtchylak – the latter another throat singer, though from a Tuvan tradition – and you are on the way to Tagaq’s work.
