Believed to be the first of its kind, the Marco Civil da Internet (Civil Rights Framework for the Internet) was signed in April by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and came into effect in June.
It will give the country’s 100 million web users the right to free expression online, with internet service providers (ISPs) only able to suspend users when they owe the ISPs money.
