In an otherwise bleak picture of progress towards clean energy, the rapid expansion of wind and solar technologies is one of the few causes for hope. But uptake of renewables is often stymied by the idea that integrating ‘variable’ energy sources pushes up electricity prices.
A new study from the International Energy Agency (IEA) presents a strong counter-claim. ‘The Power of Transformation’ says it is possible to generate up to 10 per cent of electricity from solar and wind, and integrate it into electricity grids at no added cost.
