The low-friction, high-capacity technology of railways means the economic and environmental costs of expanding them are worthwhile, argues Gareth Dennis.
The railways are the unrivalled champion when it comes to moving large volumes of goods and people across land – no other mode can get close to their capacity, efficiency and safety.
Thanks to the very low friction between the steel wheel and steel rail, railways can move a load using 10 to 35 per cent of the energy that road haulage would need.1
