Teenage Lore’s father is a high-ranking SS officer, her mother an ardent Nazi wanted by the Allies. As the war ends, Lore is entrusted with transporting her three younger siblings across Germany to her grandmother’s. She’s privileged, imbued with Nazi beliefs in Aryan superiority, the rightness of the cause, and the inevitable victory. But as they walk across war-shattered Germany, Lore meets with a rather different world – of catastrophic destruction, violence and insecurity. And she meets Thomas, who claims to be Jewish and a survivor of Buchenwald.
Lore is charmless, unsympathetic but resilient, and her confusion, questioning and emergence is told convincingly, with little dialogue and sometimes breathtaking visuals.
