The Nobel Committee has done it again. 2025’s Peace Prize landed in the undeserving lap of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, honoured for her ‘struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy’. If by ‘just and peaceful’ the judges meant ‘via crippling sanctions, CIA black ops and US airstrikes’, then I suppose we have a winner!
While Machado has been praised for uniting Venezuela’s opposition against Maduro’s increasingly authoritarian rule, her brand of ‘peace’ includes cheering on the US’s legally dubious (understatement of the year) bombing of fishing boats in the Caribbean. She has also applauded Israel’s ‘firm actions’ in its genocidal war on Gaza.
