Critically acclaimed South African singer Thandiswa Mazwai is in London for one week only. It’s late, cold and I am ill, but I need to take my chance to speak with her before her show at The Jazz Café, an iconic venue in Camden Town.
During the soundcheck, I stand outside a tiny room where Thandiswa is being interviewed by a journalist from the US who is greedily eating through my assigned hour. Irritated, I start mentally shortlisting my most urgent questions, assuming my timeslot will be curtailed, but then Thandiswa beckons me in.
