Children play a ball game using a makeshift net in Ngong forest in the outskirts of Kenya’s bustling capital, Nairobi. Over time, the forest has been encroached upon by private urban developments and so, with nowhere else to go, children from the neighbouring slums must adapt. In capturing this scene, photographer Gordwin Odhiambo remembers his own childhood in the Kibera slum, and the vital public space that has been lost since. Odhiambo’s interest in visual storytelling began whilst studying international development, and his photographs explore the relationship between people and their changing surroundings. His work has been featured by National Geographic, The New York Times, Le Monde and more.
