Strict borders within North America were dealt a blow in April after Canada’s Supreme Court ruled that the US-based Sinixt First Nations people have rights to lands north of the border. This has arguably opened the door for legal challenges to the continent’s colonial boundaries.
The case began in 2010 when a Canadian court charged Richard Desautel – a US-based member of the Sinixt, whose traditional homelands stretch up from the US state of Washington to Canada’s province of British Columbia – for hunting an elk in Canadian territory.
