On 6 February, Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) conducted a military-style raid – with low-flying helicopters, snipers, and dogs in tow – on the Wet’suwet’en nation, an indigenous territory which has not signed any treaties with, nor ceded any of its land to, the Canadian state.
RCMP were enforcing a recent injunction by British Columbia’s supreme court, which seeks to bar indigenous people from obstructing work on a $6.6-billion, 670-kilometre Coastal GasLink pipeline.
