In a bid to set the world record for the most trees planted in a single day, the Indian government set aside $6.2 billion and 800,000 volunteers to plant 50 million, in Uttar Pradesh, in just 24 hours. With survival rates for saplings estimated at 60 per cent, the Indian state will have to wait to hear if they have out-planted Pakistan, which sowed 847,000 trees in a day back in 2013.
A group in the British town of Frome in Somerset recently launched the first ‘community fridge’ in the country, to provide free, leftover food to those in need and take a bite out of the country’s food surplus – which averages at over $600-worth of food per household, per year. It follows a trend in cities around the world – including in Iran, Spain and Dubai – where communities have set up ‘solidarity fridges’, mostly to provide food to the homeless.
