Three years of inflation and chronic shortages of basic foods have hit Venezuelans hard. But there are millions of people who, instead of rioting, are planting and mobilizing to beat scarcity.
‘Five years ago, I knew perhaps eight people doing urban agriculture, but now I know about 500,’ says Jose Loaiza, a member of La Minga, a city group of growers. He reports how an urban agriculture surge has seen windowsills, patios and public parks turned over to production.
