Last February saw 300 people die in the Mediterranean, as another convoy of refugees from North Africa failed to make the treacherous journey to the southern Italian coast. By the time you read this, many more will have been killed in the same way.
This rise in migrant deaths has been widely attributed to the dismantling in November 2014 of Mare Nostrum – the Italian-led search-and-rescue mission credited with saving 150,000 lives in its one-year lifespan.
