Report from Australia
In mid-October, 71 babies will face off the Australian government in court. The infants are among 2,490 children of asylum-seekers held in some form of immigration detention.
What sets these babies apart from other detained children is that they were all born in Australia. Their lawyers will try to convince federal judges that because they did not technically ‘enter by sea’ they are not ‘unlawful maritime arrivals’ under the Migration Act.
