A glance at the film poster and you probably take them for boys, but they are not. Bobo is tomboyish with her cropped hair and rejection of make-up. Klara wears mascara, has a Mohican stripe, and makes a lot of noise. They want to shake things up, break through the staid conformity of their schoolmates, have an impact. When, at a school concert, they watch lycra-clad girls from their year gyrating on stage to a disco tune, they decide to set up their own punk band. The pair are ‘communist’, anti-competitive, but naïve, and wind up their schoolmates by passing to their opponents in basketball. Gutsy, they come up with a punk racket with the simple lyric ‘abort the sport’. Neither can play, but they are thumping and loud. No-one listens.
But when the girls pull in lonely, geeky Christian Hedvig, who is a brilliant classical guitarist, maybe then they really can do something with their music.
