Low-income families in New York City will soon be able to swap their leftovers for fresh food. The Hello Compost scheme aims to create an urban composting system and introduce a non-monetary currency to promote local growers and healthy eating. The US produces over 35 million tons of food waste each year but 14.5 per cent of households do not know where their next meal is coming from.
Peru has launched a forward-thinking programme to increase energy access for over two million of its poorest citizens – by providing free solar electricity. Currently 66 per cent of Peru’s population does not have access to the grid, but the government says the new scheme will allow 95 per cent of the country to access electricity by the end of 2016.
