The Bolivian government has created the world’s largest protected wetland at Llanos de Moxos – an area bigger than the Netherlands and Belgium combined. The 6.9-million hectare site is home to a rich variety of life, including 568 bird species and 102 species of reptile. The country passed its ‘Law of the Rights of Mother Earth’ in 2010.
Traditional cookstoves are a growing source of carbon dioxide emissions – not good for people or the planet. Indoor air pollution from these fires causes an estimated 1.5 million premature deaths annually. In Nepal, where 85 per cent of people use traditional stoves, the government has decided enough is enough and said it intends to make the country smoke free by 2017, while promoting alternative energy.
