Fewer girls are being subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM), according to new data released by the UN.

Last December, the UN General Assembly passed unanimously a resolution calling on member states to ‘intensify efforts towards the complete elimination’ of the practice, which three million girls and women undergo every year. More than 140 million girls and women are living with the effects of FGM, which can include complications in childbirth, susceptibility to obstetric fistula, psychological problems, infection, sexual dysfunction and post-traumatic stress.
