A police operation against one of Brazil’s largest criminal organizations, the Comando Vermelho, ended with 121 people dead in the Penha and Alemão favelas on 28 October in Rio de Janeiro. It was the deadliest police action in the city’s history.
Governor Cláudio Castro, a rightwing politician from the same party as former president Jair Bolsonaro, was applauded by many residents fed up with drug-related violence, but others denounced the raid as a massacre.
