A friend of mine has recently moved in with her girlfriend and is going to let out her own flat, ‘to pay the mortgage’. As an active member of a tenants’ union, I’ve always seen landlordism as intrinsically exploitative – but she says she may want to move back into it in future. She plans to let it out at below market rent – ‘only to cover its costs’ – and will prioritize tenants who are activists or in need. Is this enough to make it fair?
