Only a few clicks of a mouse away, the internet pulsates with vibrant, beautiful pictures of Arushi Jain. The Delhi-born, US-based musician and technologist is surrounded by a spaghetti of cables linking a series of keyboards and small synthesizers. She’s clad in simple robes. It’s an indicator of where Jain’s work sits, somewhere between the ancient and modern.
In fact, Delight – Jain’s first album since her critically acclaimed under the lilac sky (2021) – has a very clear idea of what it is. Jain has brought her training in Indian classical music to an electronic world. There are no actual sitars or sarods, tablas or tamburas. But there are programs that emulate the shimmering, beating harmonics that characterize sitars and sarods, while marimbas and woodwind instruments make appearances in real life.
