Wildcats could be brought back from the brink of extinction in the UK, after a Scottish project introduced 19 young wildcats into a secret pine forest location in the Cairngorm mountains. The destruction of native woodland, interbreeding with domestic cats and car accidents have all driven the wild predator’s population down. But thanks to this small group of feline pioneers raised by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, things are looking up. They plan to eventually release around 60 cats.
